Girl's Class Basket Ball Champions, 1904-1905

p15963coll21_798.jpg

This picture is a team photo of girl's class champion basketball team for 1904-1905 and junior class of 1906. One woman in white shirt, most likely manager. Six players in dark outfits shown standing and sitting. The player in center back held the basketball with class number '06 on the ball. Individual class photos for the women can also be found in this collection. The roster on p. 138 lists seven players, plus a manager and two coaches. The Coaches, both men, were not pictured in the team photo. Positions listed indicate that the Girls are playing five player unmodified basketball. These two factors violate two of the three characteristics of women's collegiate athletics at this time: separation from men and modification of the games. The uniform in the description was as follows: sailor style tops with ties, mid-calf length skirts, and stockings. The manager was seen in a white blouse and long skirt. Their hair was pulled back on top of their head and most have large bows in the back. The administrative head was Clara Ermbeck.
