Co-ed Badminton a Popular Activity, 1950-51

Coed_Badminton_a_Popular_Activity_195051.jpg

Soon after the last basketball had swished the bucket, badminton season got under way in the gym. Both men and women played for fun and relaxation, and a tournament was planned for the end of the season. A timeout was taken here while Dough Black, Jane Snyder, Ruth Reinhart, and Jean Allison discuss some of the fine points of the game. Several times in the past years badminton champions had visited Wooster to demonstrate their game. The fifties were a conservative time, and women physical educators responded to fears of the mannish athlete by pushing co-recreational sports opportunities as well as placing more emphasis on lifetime sport. Note the emphasis on "fun and relaxation" in the write-up. Sport as a social activity was often an emphasized description. A pair of women were dressed in striped t-shirts, dark shorts, and sneakers. The woman and the man were wearing plain white tops with white shorts, and sneakers. The administrative head at the time was Kathleen Lowrie.
