Honorary Varsity Hockey Team, 1931-32

Honorary_Varsity_Hockey_Team_193132.jpg

This is a picture of the Honorary Varsity Hockey Team, 1931-32. This was the year an honorary varsity team was chosen from the two upper-class teams. Mary Jane Paumier was the elected captain. An all-star freshman team was formed also from the two Freshman class teams. The Freshmen challenged the Varsity to a game but were defeated by the upper-class girls. A place on the honorary varsity carried with it all-star distinction. Although basketball has a long tradition of Honorary Varsities and Black & Gold Teams, this appears to be the very first Honorary Varsity Team chosen for field hockey. This year Mildred Creighton was the head of hockey on the Athletic Board. She and her class managers aided Miss Coolidge with many of the technical details of hockey.A photo of Creighton is at the bottom of the page. She oversaw both hockey and volleyball. The women appear to be wearing dresses or skirts and blouses/sweaters. The administrative head at the time was Kathleen Lowrie.
