Field Hockey, 1934-35

Field_Hockey_193435.jpg

The photo collage detail is of the field hockey team, 1934-35. Ten women were standing on the steps of Severance Gymnasium holding their sticks and wearing two piece gym suites. The people on the top row were Abbott, Gillam, Clark, Bannan, March. The people on the front row were Ames, Cook, Lantz, Cady, A. Bonsall. Hockey games in the crisp autumn air, long hikes in the winter snow, and tennis tournaments in the spring are only a few of the opportunities which the Women's Athletic Association presents to all women of the college for participation in athletic activity. No one was excluded from these sports because they were not born athletes and schedules were arranged in such a way as to allow everyone to play. The range of activities including archery, volleyball, swimming, hockey, bounce ball, fencing, tumbling, basketball, tennis, dancing, and golf was wide enough to appeal to everyone. The women were wearing a short sleeved gym top and very baggy bloomer type shorts. The administrative head at the time was Kathleen Lowrie
