Possibly the most pleasant surprise for Scot Athletics followers in 1978 came when Coach Maria 'Doc' Sexton's Women's Tennis team compiled an outstanding 9-1 regular season record. Their outstanding record during the regular season was topped by the team's post-season record. They started their post-season play by winning the State Championship, with Nina Gordon, Audi Wynn, and Fran Kielbowicz all taking state championship honors. They followed this performance by placing second in the Regional Championships in Chicago. This earned the team the right to participate in the National Championships, held in Santa Barbara, California, where the team placed eleventh of twenty-nine teams. Women's tennis players wore white warm-up tops and white tennis skirts with two lines down the right side. The skirts were very short with tennis bloomers underneath. White short sleeve tops were worn under the warm-up. The administrative head at the time was Nan Nichols.
